Ultimate Moleskine® Repair Guide

Ideally, you will never need to repair your Moleskine® notebook. However, if your notebook comes across difficult times we have constructed a list of ways to repair your Mole.

Repair an Outer Moleskine® Spine Tear:

Tearing along the spine is by far the most common area of Moleskine® notebook to experience harm. There has been an overwhelming response from the notebooking community in developing DIY solutions to solve this problem. Most notable has been reinforcement of binding tape along the spine.

Solution: By locating a strong adhesive tape you can tape along the spine to add additional strength against cracking and splitting of the Moleskine® PVC oil cloth. The quick solution is to utilize black electrical tape, however if you are looking to add an element of sophistication you can order specialized book binding tape.

Repair an Inner Moleskine® Binding Tear:

The Moleskine notebook will often times develop a tear just inside the front and back cover.

Solution: There are two types of tape that do a great job in fixing this problem. On the short term, clear packing tape has a nice thin consistency that will not add weight or unnatural thickness to the notebook. As a long term solution, interior book binding tape that is produced by Lineco that does a great job at creating a long-term bond to last throughout the notebook’s lifespan.

Repair a Moleskine’s® Scuff Marks and Oil Cloth Tears:

After much use, a Moleskine’s® cover can develop scuff marks and tears within the oil cloth material.

Solution: Though these are usually never very problematic, it is recommended to utilize black acrylic paint. Be careful to apply only the amount that you need while blending it into the oil cloth surface. If you are experiencing oil cloth tears and dings on a daily basis, then you may wish to consider protecting the Moleskine® with a high quality leather cover.

Fix a Crumpled Moleskine® Page:

When the notebook is left loose in a backpack or bag it is not uncommon for the pages to get bent and crumpled with movement and time.

Solution: If the content of the pages are something that you care to maintain without wrinkles, you can iron every page that has experienced distress. Please make a special note of placing the iron on its lowest setting to avoid igniting the page.

Repair a Broken Moleskine® Strap:

After much use and constant tugging the Moleskine’s® strap can lead to it becoming detached.

Solution: While there are different examples on fixing the elastic strap, we will save you time by directing you to the best tutorial here.

Repair a Tattered Moleskine® Ribbon:

With time, all Moleskine® bookmarking ribbons become undone to some extent. However, if you are finding that your ribbons are becoming unnecessarily tattered then you may wish to add a preventative.

Solution: Hold a small flame (lighter/candle) beside the end of the ribbon to until the end fabric threads constrict and bond together. Please attempt to melt the ribbon fibers rather than burning them.

Repair a Bent Moleskine® Cover:

Under multiple forms of stress, the covers can become bent.

Solution: After a cover gets bent, it can be rather challenging to restore it to its original state. By correcting bent pages and cover and applying prolonged distributed weight across the cover, this problem can be repaired to some extent. Any heavy flat object should work in applying this pressure.
